Grade 4 (Hourly) Position Description: The Accountant I will assist with maintaining the financial systems general ledger through loading and posting entries, balancing, and… reconciling transactions. Assists with processing and posting cash and journal voucher transactions for all University departments; researches and reconciles journal transaction errors. Additional duties include assistance in reconciliation of various general ledger and bank accounts; and serving as back-up for co-workers in accounting functions. An understanding of general accounting and related concepts is necessary to effectively perform the duties. The position requires independent judgement in the context of established guidelines, analytical skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to address issues with internal and external constituents. Use of Excel and data query tools are required to perform these duties. Attention to detail oriented and excellent organizational skills are required. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Post journal entries for the university accumulated through journal feeds, sub ledger feeds and manual entry. Review transactions for balancing, system posting and reconciliation of sub ledgers. Monitor and research out-of-balance issues to find resolution. Work with University departments to resolve journal transaction issues. Complete cash posting transactions using queries and sophisticated Excel macros; serve as general backup for cash posting process; assist with process troubleshooting. Prepare journal entries for correcting transactions. Participate in June 30 year-end close, including entries for accruals and top-side GAAP adjustments. Maintenance of general ledger programs, accounts and chartfields. Assist with reconciliation of university bank accounts. Reconciliation of general ledger accounts and related transactions as requested. Cross-train for duties of other department accountants for redundancy and process continuation. Organization and maintenance of electronic backup documents. Participate in system upgrade testing as necessary. Prepare ad-hoc projects and reporting as requested by university financial administration or leadership. Special projects as assigned by supervisor. Preferred Qualifications: Experience with budgetary accounting. One (1) year of related work experience. Related experience may include: Accounting or financial background, experience with general ledger, experience with multi-divisional or multi-location operations, account reconciliations. Experience with large accounting software programs. Competencies: Accounting Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel Data queries Organization and attention to detail Compensation Target: $21 per hour Additional: Our office operates on a 37.5-hour work week, Monday-Friday and is currently located on the 2nd floor of a building with no elevator. This position has a normal office situation; remote work as indicated by department. Position may require occasional travel between campus buildings to meet with other departments. Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.
