Purpose…
The Underwriting Consultant underwrites more complex new policies and modifications to existing group contracts. Frequently interacts with agents/applicants on problem cases. Performs case quality audits and training of less seasoned Underwriters’ work.
Essential Functions:
• Applies underwriting policies and procedures to complex situations and/or large groups to evaluate risks. Monitors trends and identifies the need for new or revised underwriting policies, procedures, and practices. Recommends changes to underwriting leadership.
• Provide leadership and guidance junior members in preparing financial analysis.
• Meets insurance underwriting operational standards by contributing information to strategic plans and reviews; resolving problems; identifying system improvements.
• Completes insurance underwriting by enforcing adherence to internal and external underwriting policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulations; reviewing risk acceptability; auditing files; declined files, and large limits; evaluating loss history, financial statements, and loss control surveys; reviewing work volumes, turn times, and workflow. Prepares insurance information and reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data and trends.
• Resolves insurance problem escalations by reviewing file documentation; evaluating options; applying guidelines. Improves insurance product profitability by tracking and analyzing product results; evaluating trends; identifying deficit accounts. Maintains customer confidence and protects organization operations by keeping information confidential, cautioning others regarding potential breaches.
• Improves insurance underwriting and leadership job knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices; participating in professional societies.
Contributes to insurance underwriting and organization success by welcoming related, different, and new requests; helping others accomplish job results.
• Qualifications
Education Level: Bachelor’s Degree. In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, an additional 4 years of relevant work experience is required in addition to the required work experience.
Experience: 8 years underwriting experience in group health, medical, ancillary benefits and/or pharmacy
Licenses/Certifications
Associate in Personal Insurance, Commercial Underwriter
Chartered Life Underwriter Upon Hire
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
• Knowledge of insurance underwriting methods and procedures
• Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
• Skill in monitoring/assessing the performance of self, other individuals, or organizations to
make improvements or take corrective action.
• Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
• Knowledge of compensation insurance; rules, classifications, statues, and rates.
• Ability to apply underwriting methods to create comprehensive reports.
Salary Range: $84,816 – $168,454

This compensation range is specific and considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilites of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, internal peer equity, and market and business consideration. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at the top of the range, as compensation decisions depend on each case’s facts and circumstances, including but not limited to experience, internal equity, and location.
